What is the menopause?
Menopause is the time when, as part of the natural ageing process, a woman’s periods become irregular and then stop. This ‘change of life’ generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years, but can happen earlier or later than this for a variety of reasons. Medically, a woman is described as ‘postmenopausal’ when her periods have stopped completely for one year or more.

What happens during the menopause?
As your body approaches the menopause, the ovaries gradually become less active, producing less oestrogen and progesterone. As the level of these hormones falls, the menstrual cycle is disrupted. Exactly how the periods are affected varies from one woman to another; most commonly there is less bleeding and longer gaps between each period, but some women experience heavier, longer-lasting periods. This transitional phase, when many women seek healthcare advice, may be referred to medically as the ‘perimenopause’.

How do I know whether I am going through the menopause?
When the levels of oestrogen and progesterone fall during the menopause, this automatically causes the level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to rise. Your GP can arrange for a simple blood test which measures your FSH level, confirming whether or not you are going through menopause.

What symptoms might I experience?
More than 8 in 10 women sail through the menopause symptom-free or experience only mild symptoms, but some women experience debilitating symptoms that interfere with their lives.1 Menopausal symptoms may begin up to five years before the periods finally stop and usually last for one to two years. Most commonly, these include hot flushes, night sweats, headaches, mood swings and a lower sex drive.

What is HRT?
The conventional medical view of menopause is that it is a disease that needs to be treated, in which women become deficient in oestrogen and progesterone. If menopause is viewed in this way (rather than as a natural change in body function) replacing the missing hormones with artificial ones seems a logical solution. However, recent research has shown that this is not a risk-free option.

What’s the problem with HRT?
HRT was originally developed to help women experiencing debilitating menopausal symptoms, but later became much more widely used when doctors also began prescribing it for healthy postmenopausal women to protect against osteoporosis and heart disease. As more and more women used HRT for longer periods of time, there was growing concern amongst doctors about its safety.3

Two large studies have since demonstrated the dangers of HRT and led to significant changes in the way it is prescribed.

Overall the health risks of taking the most common form of HRT outweigh the benefits.

A major US research project involving over 16,000 women looked at the effects of the most commonly used form of HRT – pills known as ‘combined HRT’. In 2002, this trial had to be stopped early because of the health risks to the women involved. The researchers concluded that although this form of HRT gives protection against osteoporosis and bowel cancer, these benefits are outweighed by an increased risk of breast and uterine cancer, heart attack and stroke.

In 2005, results of the NHS-led ‘Million Women Study’ confirmed the link between breast cancer and combined HRT, with researchers estimating that 20,000 cases of breast cancer over the last decade have been due to HRT use. It was also found that oestrogen-only HRT carries a significant risk of endometrial cancer.

Homeopathy for Stress Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine. Stress incontinence is prompted by a physical movement or activity — such as coughing, sneezing or heavy lifting — that puts pressure (stress) on your bladder. Stress incontinence is not related to psychological stress.

Stress incontinence is much more common in women than in men.

If you have stress incontinence, you may experience urine leakage when you:

Cough
Sneeze
Laugh
Stand up
Lift something heavy
Exercise

You may not experience incontinence every time you do one of these things, but any pressure-increasing activity can make you more vulnerable to unintentional urine loss, particularly when your bladder is full.

Stress incontinence occurs because of poor function in the muscles that support the bladder or control the release of urine. Sometimes both muscle groups are involved. The bladder expands as it fills with urine, but valve-like muscles at either end of the urethra — the short tube through which urine flows to exit your body — normally stay "closed" or contracted, preventing urine release until you reach a bathroom. When the muscles supporting the bladder are weak, however, pressure can trigger urine release before you're ready. Problems with the "valves" themselves (the urinary sphincter) may have the same effect.

Your bladder may not even feel unusually full when you have urine leakage due to stress incontinence. Anything that exerts force on the abdominal muscles — sneezing, bending over, lifting, laughing hard — also puts pressure on your bladder.

Your urinary sphincter and pelvic floor muscles may lose tone because of:

Childbirth. In women, poor function of pelvic floor muscles or the sphincter may occur because of tissue or nerve damage incurred during delivery of a child. Stress incontinence from this damage may begin soon after delivery or years later.
Prostate surgery. In men, the most common factor leading to stress incontinence is the surgical removal of the prostate gland (prostatectomy) to treat prostate cancer. Because the prostate gland encircles the urethra, a prostatectomy results in less urethral support.

Treatments and drugs

Your doctor is likely to recommend a combination of treatment strategies to end or lessen the number of incontinence episodes. If an underlying cause or contributing factor, such as a urinary tract infection, is identified, you'll also receive treatments to address those conditions.

Behavioral therapies
Behavioral therapies may help you eliminate or lessen episodes of stress incontinence. The stress incontinence treatments your doctor will recommend may cover the following areas:

Fluid consumption. Your doctor may recommend the amount and timing of fluid consumption during the day. You should also avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.

Healthy lifestyle changes. Quitting smoking or losing weight may lessen your vulnerability to stress incontinence and improve symptoms if you do have stress incontinence.

Scheduled toilet trips. Your doctor may recommend a schedule for toileting. More frequent voiding of the bladder may reduce the number or severity of stress incontinence episodes.

Pelvic floor muscle exercises. Exercises called Kegels strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and urinary sphincter. Your doctor or a physical therapist can help you learn how to do these exercises correctly. How well Kegels will work for you depends on your willingness to perform the exercises regularly, just like any other exercise routine.

Devices
Certain devices designed for women may help control stress incontinence, including:

Vaginal pessary. This ring-shaped device, fitted and put into place by your doctor or nurse practitioner, helps support your bladder to prevent urine leakage. A vaginal pessary may be a good choice if you wish to avoid surgery.

Urethral plug. This small tampon-like disposable device inserted into the urethra acts as a plug to prevent leakage. It's usually used to prevent incontinence during a specific activity.

SurgerySurgical interventions to treat stress incontinence are generally designed to improve closure of the sphincter or support the bladder neck. Surgical interventions include:

Injectable bulking agents. Collagen, synthetic sugars or gels may be injected into tissues around the upper portion of the urethra. These materials increase pressure on the urethra, improving the closing ability of the sphincter. Because this intervention is relatively noninvasive and inexpensive, it may be an appropriate treatment alternative to try before other surgical options.

Open retropubic colposuspension. This procedure is often used to treat women with stress incontinence. Sutures attached either to ligaments or to bone lift and support tissues near the bladder neck and upper portion of the urethra.
Sling procedure. In this procedure most often performed for women, the surgeon uses the person's own tissue or a synthetic material to create a "sling" that supports the urethra. Slings for men are used less frequently, but this surgical approach is under investigation. A recently developed technique using a mesh sling has proved effective in easing symptoms of stress incontinence in men.

Inflatable artificial sphincter. This surgically implanted device is more often used to treat men. A cuff, which fits around the upper portion of the urethra, replaces the function of the sphincter. Tubes connect the cuff to a pressure-regulating balloon in the pelvic region and a manually operated pump in the scrotum. If the device is implanted in a woman, the pump is in the labia.

Lifestyle and home remedies
Healthy lifestyle practices can go a long way toward easing symptoms of stress incontinence.

Shed extra weight. If you're overweight — your body mass index (BMI) is over 25 — losing excess pounds can help reduce the overall pressure on your bladder and pelvic floor muscles. Losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight may help improve your stress incontinence.

Add fiber to your diet. Constipation contributes to incontinence, especially if you often strain during bowel movements. Keeping your bowel movements soft and regular allows urine to flow freely and reduces the strain that's placed on your pelvic floor muscles. Eat high-fiber foods — whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables — to relieve and prevent constipation.

Avoid eating or drinking substances that can irritate your bladder. For instance, if you know that drinking coffee throughout the day tends to make you go to the bathroom more frequently, try reducing the amount you drink.

Maintain proper fluid intake. Drinking too much fluid can make you urinate more frequently. But not drinking enough can lead to a concentration of waste in your urine, which can irritate your bladder, too.

Don't smoke. Smoking can lead to a severe chronic cough, which can aggravate the symptoms of stress incontinence.

Homeopathy for Swine Flu

Homeopathy has been very successful in treating the symptoms of flu and the Swine Flu pandemic has been no exception. Homeopaths gather symptoms from a large population and discern what is called a "genus epidemicus". The genus is the remedy, or group of remedies, with the symptoms of most people who have a particular flu. These remedies are therefore the most likely remedies to treat a particular flu strain.

2.Dulcamara is useful at the onset of a high fever. The Dulcamara cough hurts from muscular soreness. This flu is frequently brought on by cold, damp weather.

3. Nux vomica treats a flu with chills and pains in bones and joints. The irritability and chills are very marked.

4. Gelsemium treats a low fever, and is also a good remedy if you have not been well since the flu. Gelsemium patients experience weakness with shivering.

5. Arsenicum treats a burning fever that is accompanied with chills, restlessness and anxiety. The person needing Arsenicum is usually thirsty but only drinks small quantities at a time. They can have burning pains.

6. Bryonia is good for type of flu when the person does not want to move. The mouth is dry but they are thirsty.

7. Rhus tox flu can be accompanied with aching bones, restlessness, and a red tipped tongue. This is another remedy that is useful when the flu is brought on by damp weather.

8. Belladonna treats a high fever that comes on suddenly. Other accompanying symptoms of Belladonna include heat and redness.

9. Eupatorium perfoliatum experiences severe bone pains with great thirst.

10. Baptisia is a good remedy for flu, especially if it's centered in the gastro-intestinal track. This remedy can be helpful in the early stages of the flu. The person needing Baptisia can be weak, listless, and feel sore.

The above remedies cover the general conditions and treat the flu symptoms that most have experienced so far.

Influenzinum of latest make must be able to help as a preventative though it's not a fool-proof method. Two or three doses of 200c every dose a week apart will help.

Dandruff and its management

Diet also plays a big role in preventing the occurrence of dandruff in many individuals. Eating food rich in vitamin B controls dandruff because it counteracts inefficient carbohydrates and fatty metabolism. Examples of such foods are eggs and cabbage. These two also gives the body some amount of sulfur, which is considered as the mineral for a healthy scalp. However, if eggs cause some skin allergies, it should be minimized but should be replaced by other food rich in vitamin B6. Avoid hair products that contain alcohol like gels and hair sprays. They are known to be one of the major causes of dry scalp.

We suggest something else. Natural treatments. Such as vinegar. Wash your head with it, or even better, make yourself a massage with vinegar at the hair roots, and try to sleep with the solution over night with your hair wrapped in a towel. Don’t get scared of that awful smell, it will go away, and I say it’s worth it, for a shiny beautiful hair, and most of all, with NO dandruff.

• Maintain a healthy diet. A diet with sufficient zinc, vitamin B, and essential fatty acids may help treat dandruff.

• Get some sunlight. Sunlight gives off vitamin D, and may help get rid of dandruff. But, don't sunbathe because exposure to ultraviolet can harm your skin. Just remember to use sunscreen on your face and body as you get a little sunlight to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

• Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil extracted from the Australian tea tree has served as an antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal remedy for centuries. Shampooing with tea tree proves effective in combating dandruff.

• Vinegar Wash: Vinegar wash has been promoted as one of the best home remedy to shaking away the flakes. To make vinegar solution: mix two teaspoons of vinegar with six teaspoons of water and massage into scalp before bed. In the morning apply the same vinegar solution and rinse hair with water.
Remember whatever anti-dandruff treatment you choose, never scratch your scalp. Since scratching may irritate your scalp or cause wounds on your scalp that may worsen your condition.

These are some ways in which we can get rid of dandruff.

Tips 1: Keep the scalp clean. Oil hair on alternate days and shampoo.

Mix 2 tspns of Brandy in 1 cup of water. Apply with the fingertips to the roots of hair. Wash after ½ hour with shampoo.

Mix 1 tblspn of Olive oil with 1 tspn of limejuice. Apply well on the scalp and cover the head by tying an old scarf. Keep it on overnight and shampoo the next morning.

Tips 5:

1 tspn of Fenugreek seed powder mixed with an egg. Apply and leave for ½ an hour before shampooing the hair.

Tips 6:

1 tspn fenugreek seed powder mixed with 1 cup of yogurt. Apply and leave for ½ an hour before washing.

Tips 7:

Take 2 tblspns of Beetroot juice and add 1 egg and 1 tspn limejuice to this. Apply and leave for ½ an hour before washing.

Tips 8:

Oil hair well before going to bed. Next morning mix 1 tspn limejuice with ½ tspn salt. Rub this on the scalp with the peel of a lime turned inside out. Leave for 1 hour before shampooing.

For Dry Dandruff
* Properly mix lemon juice and a tablespoon of sour yogurt.
* Apply this mixture on your hair.
* After 15 minutes rinse it with shampoo.
* Gently massage the scalp with a few drops of cedar wood oil.
* Increase the intake of essential fatty acid supplements.

The following over-the-counter treatments and self-care tips can help you control and manage seborrheic dermatitis.
 Shampoo daily. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo that contains selenium sulfide, tar, pyrithione zinc, salicylic acid, ciclopirox or ketoconazole as the active ingredient. If you don't see results, try a shampoo with a different active ingredient.
 Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream. Daily application of nonprescription clotrimazole (Lotrimin) may be helpful.
 Apply an anti-itch cream or lotion to the affected area. A nonprescription hydrocortisone cream, containing at least 1 percent hydrocortisone, can temporarily relieve the itch.
 Avoid harsh soaps and detergents. Be sure to rinse the soap completely off your body.
 Wear smooth-textured cotton clothing. This will help you avoid irritation.
 Shave off your beard or mustache. Seborrheic dermatitis can be worse under mustaches and beards. If this is the case for you, shaving might ease your symptoms.
 Avoid scratching whenever possible. Cover the itchy area with a dressing, if you can't keep from scratching it. Trim nails and wear gloves at night.
Cradle cap
Cradle cap usually clears up on its own within a few months. In the meantime, wash your baby's hair once a day with mild baby shampoo. Loosen the scales with a small, soft-bristled brush before rinsing off the shampoo.
If the scales don't loosen easily, rub a few drops of mineral oil or olive oil onto your baby's scalp. Let the oil soak into the scales for a few minutes, and then brush and shampoo your baby's hair as usual. If you leave the oil in your baby's hair, it may allow more scales to accumulate on your baby's scalp.
